Annette Kellerman
If you like wearing a swimsuit that isn't a wool dress, then you can thank Annette Kellerman for that. In 1907, when she stepped onto the beach wearing a one-piece bathing suit that ended in shorts above her knees, the police were immediately called and she was arrested for indecency.

Cops patrolled the beach with a tape measure back in those days, measuring women's suits to make sure they weren't too short. Kellerman thought that was ridiculous, and her arrests helped pave the way for more common-sense swimwear.
