Dreamy Hair and Beauty Hacks with Amber Fillerup Clark of Barefoot Blonde
We tapped the effortlessly beautiful lifestyle blogger for her best hair and beauty hacks.
If you, like the rest of us, frequently find yourself scrolling Pinterest for its endless visual inspiration, chances are your pin boards are familiar with the long blonde tresses of one Amber Fillerup Clark. The hair and beauty maven behind popular lifestyle blog Barefoot Blonde, Amber is pretty much the resident braid expert of the Internet. And in addition to amassing over a million social media followers around the globe (NBD), she's recently launched her own line of premium clip-in hair extensions, Barefoot Blonde Hair.
We tapped the blogger, wife, and mom of two adorable children for her favorite beauty products, best signature braids (of course), and tips on turning a bad hair day around.
Livingly: What’s your power outfit of choice?
AF: Let’s see –– I love dresses. Anytime I don’t know what to wear, I’m most comfortable in a cute little flow-y day dress and ballet flats. That’s kind of my go-to, or just, you know, the basic T-shirt, jeans, and flats. Sometimes I can’t wear a dress with kids –– so I’ll revert to an old rocker tee, jeans, and flats.
How would you define your signature style?
I think it’s really easy-going. I try to add a lot of color to it, so I guess I would say it’s easygoing, fun, and girly.
Hair products you can’t live without?
Yes! We just moved to Hawaii, so let me go see what I brought with me, because that’ll be a good indicator of what was worth it. Olaplex [Hair Protector] #3 –– it restores your hair, and is something you [can put in] after your shampoo and before your conditioner.
Also, Bumble and Bumble's Surf Foam Spray. I love scrunching my hair with it!
Favorite new beauty products or trends right now?
I love liquid matte lipsticks! My favorite are Stila and Bare Minerals, in the shades Patina in Stila and Boss in Bare Minerals. I have multiples of them because I wanted to keep one in my purse, one in my bathroom, etc.
Lipstick or mascara?
Livingly: Us too, liquid lipstick!
Favorite type of braid?
I love the boxer braids, just because I can wear those all day, even through the night and the next day, and they just stay in place.
But I love just scrunching my hair with that Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, and having it be really voluminous on top, with a messy side braid. I’ve been doing that a ton because it takes like two seconds to do. Those are probably my two go-tos right now.
Tips for turning a bad hair day around?
I’ll put dry shampoo in and tease the back, then throw it up in a Brigitte Bardot-ish [half-up] messy bun. I love to do that on bad hair days, just because it’s like, the messier, the better. But braids always work with greasy hair, because it kind of holds it in place. Boxer braids are a good option for when your hair is just like, not working.
Obviously, the top knot; sometimes I’ll even just throw some extensions in with my top knot, because my hair’s thin and I feel like when I have the extensions in it, it makes my top knot look good on a bad hair day.
Favorite hairstyles for a night out?
I’ve been loving using hair accessories! I have this clip with a big silk bow on back. I love just doing a loose ponytail with a big bow, or a long braid with that on the end. It’s fun to play around with hair accessories right now.
Urban Outfitters has a ton of cheap little hair accessories –– they're all like $6-15, so I just bought a ton of those and have been playing around with them.
Livingly: Yes! Such a cute way to play up your look and make it a little more chic without trying too hard.
