When Cat Marnell was fired from xoJane.com in June 2012 because she'd relapsed into drug addiction—confessing that she'd rather be "on the rooftop of Le Bain smoking angel dust" than doing her job—she warned the world she'd write a book. And it looks like the book is finally here. Or coming. Maybe, if Marnell manages to squeeze in some writing in between all that angel dust smoking.
According to a report in Page Six and in Publisher's Marketplace, Marnell has sold her memoirs—working title How to Murder Your Life—to editor Sarah Knight at Simon & Schuster for an undisclosed sum that Page Six number-checks at $500,000. Yes, that's a cool half-million—enough to buy Marnell plenty of smoke-ables.
"The proposal details her numerous sexual conquests," Page Six reports—calling it a book about "her life as a spoiled rich kid of a psychiatrist and a psychoanalyst."
"Aside from four abortions, she recalls getting 'choked out by a Park Avenue millionaire kid in a pine grove by the reservoir at 4 a.m.' and 'sex in vacant lots in Bushwick with white rappers.'"
While Simon & Schuster has refused to publicly disclose the dollar amount of her deal, Publisher's Marketplace has confirmed Page Six's tip about the half-mil. The trade website calls How to Murder Your Life Marnell's "own brand of brash, vulnerable, and candid storytelling spun into a long-form memoir, pitched as 'Devil Wears Prada meets Basketball Diaries meets Bergdorf Blondes on PCP.'" The publication calls the sale "a major deal," which, by its own measure, chalks in at $500,000 or more.
