I don't know what it's like in your neck of the woods, but in New York, over the past few years, the winter-to-summer changeover has been pretty snappy—like, one day it's 50 degrees and chilly outside, the next it's 95, hot, and humid. And for me, with my sensitive-but-a-little-oily-and-sometimes-dry-confused skin, this year's change of seasons hasn't been cute.
See, while in the winter, I know exactly what to put on my face to keep the peace—Kiehl's Rosa Arctica cream, MAC Studio Fix, a lick of Rosebud Balm—the summer can be tricky. Luckily, I've found four great new products that I'm confident will see me through September. I've been using all of these beauty products religiously for the past week and have been loving them.
Have you tried any of these?
1. No. 7 Fanomenal Mascara, £12.95 at Boots: In the summer, I tend to really pare down my makeup routine. I also use a lot less color on my lips. So, to avoid winding up with a totally blank canvas face, I like to up the eyelash ante when it gets warm—the trick, though, is to find a formula that won't wilt or smudge in the heat. Enter Boots' new No. 7 Fanomenal Mascara—a stay-put intense-but-not-gummy formula that has a brush that fans your eyelashes out when you apply it. The result is dramatic and glamorous!
2. Kiehl's Skin Rescuer, $40 at Kiehl's: In person, I can get very hyperbolic, but I don't usually talk in OMGs in writing, so this is serious when I say that Kiehl's Skin Rescuer is one of the best moisturizers for sensitive, dry skin that I've ever used. A sample landed on my desk weeks ago, but I didn't try it (me and Rosa Arctica are, like, BFFs for life) until I popped it in my carry-on to fly to Europe last weekend. When I got on my flight, took my makeup off, and put on Skin Rescuer, I could feel its calming and smoothing effects instantly. You know how bad plane air is, right? Well, my skin looked even-toned, wasn't irritated, felt supple and well-moisturized, and after getting off a red-eye, taking a connecting flight, and then going straight to a dinner party in Helsinki, my friends told me I looked well-rested and my skin was glowing. I've been using Skin Rescuer every day since and I've been loving it. I've had fewer irritations and flare-ups than usual, and definitely fewer dry patches.
3. No. 7 BB Lips, £8.50 at Boots: Sometimes, a girl just wants a lip gloss that's not suuuper shiny and not imbued with sparkles, amirite? This No. 7 balm (mine is called "Ballerina"—it's a beige-y medium-y pink, a sheer veil of color that's just slightly lighter than my natural lips) is exactly what I needed this summer. It's nourishing, pretty, and has SPF15—which is so crucial because if you're like me and have ever gotten sun blisters on your lips, you know to use sun-protective balm when you go outside.
4. L'Oreal Professionel Mythic Oil, $32 available in salons: When I was growing up, my mom sent me to get perms every year (it was the '80s and early '90s), and so all the way up through high school, I had no idea that easy-to-manage straight hair was something that I was lucky to have (because I spent so many years grappling with frizzy permed hair). I'm happy to report that I haven't had a perm since 1994 and, over the past 20-ish years, I've learned how to take care of my (straight) hair: lots of rosemary-infused shampoo (for scalp health—I like Aveda's Pure Abundance) and Terax Crema everyday. Still, when it gets really hot and humid outside, even my stick-straight hair gets a little frizzy and flyaway. And I've been experimenting with heat-styling lately (helloooo Sleep in Rollers + Hood!). So my new favorite leave-in treatment for the summer is definitely L'Oreal Professionel's Mythic Oil—a fragrant, nourishing non-oily oil that protects and helps maintain the health of your hair. This summer, L'Oreal's issued a limited-edition Mythic Oil in collaboration with Dilek Hanif. The $32 bottle comes with a bracelet created by the designer.
