As the resident beauty obsessive here at StyleBistro HQ, I'm much more invested in revamping my makeup bag than my closet this spring.
A self-diagnosed hoarder — you know how most people's top dresser drawers are dedicated to, say, underpants? Well mine's stuffed to the brim with products, just cosmetics that is. Lotions, fragrances, hair care, yeah, that's all dispersed elsewhere throughout my itty-bitty Manhattan apartment, anyhoo — this season I'm hoping to, for once in my life, stick to my goal of spring cleaning, getting rid of the stuff collecting dust (and germs!) and adding sparkly matte new goodies to my arsenal.
That said, having worked in retail for the vast majority of my adult life, this girl likes to shop. (I once had that Mint app that tracks your spending — deleted it in a week. It's THAT bad.) So, below, I've highlighted a few new spring products I can't wait to get my hands, along with a couple pieces I envision pairing with them.
Givenchy's Ecrin Prive Eyeshadow:
Givenchy Ecrin Prive Eyeshadow (Sephora in April), $73; J.Crew "Vintage" Denim Jacket, $150; Forever 21 Belted Lace Jacket, $27.80
In my fantasy-land I'd have enough cash to blow on a Givenchy-filled wardrobe — in my daydreams I'm Parisian, obv, those women embody natural beauty — but, alas, I'm a 20-something writer in NYC, and if you've seen Girls you know how that goes. This luxurious Givenchy eye shadow palette (which features three matte shadows in taupe, gray, and beige, plus one pearlescent rose pink) though, is just $73. A designer splurge I can afford! Plus, it packs two spring makeup trends in one: matte and pale pink eyes.
As for the outfit, maybe it's the fact that I'm headed to Coachella (!!!) in a few weeks (right?!) or maybe I'm just stuck in '90s, but something simple like a rugged denim jacket and lace just feels right with neutral makeup.
OPI's Nail Lacquer in "Eurso Euro":
OPI Nail Lacquer in Eurso Euro, $9; Miu Miu Shoulder Bag, $1,450
From eyelids to accessories to nails, inky cobalt's accenting everything this season. I tend to keep my nails short (okay, so maaaybe I'm a biter. Tsk, I know) so brooding colors like this look sophisticated on my chomped-down tips. And c'mon how could you not swoon over this bag. Also — it's got long crossbody-ish strap! I lose things that aren't firmly attached to my body. Just ask my boyfriend.
Lancome Blush in Love in "Peche Joue-Joue":
Lancome Blush in Love," $49; BaubleBar Love Letter Pendant, $26; Kate Spade New York Skinny Mini Bow Bangle, $78
I first fell in love with this rosy-peach blush after spotting it on Julianne Hough at the People's Choice Awards. And then again on Jessica Chastain at the SAGs. And then again on Carly Rae Jepsen at the Grammys! Not only does does this punchy shade make pale complexions glow, but the floral packaging... Meep! It's so feminine, in fact, it makes me want to layer on dainty accessories, like a bow-bedecked bangle or charm necklace. Also, ditto to Caitlin's reasoning, here.
Benefit's Fake Up Concealer and Clinique's Moisture Surge CC Cream:
Victoria's Secret Racerback Tank, $32.50; Lady Fanatics Cadet Hat, $20.95; Benefit Fake Up Concealer, $24; Clinique CC Cream, $35
So, to be completely 100 percent real here, for me, the arrival of spring only means one thing — baseball season! Not even kidding, I've been known to request off work for opening day. In St. Louis (hometown shoutout!) opening day is practically a holiday.
That said, I burn like a mother after sitting out in the sun all day, so SPF protection is a must. Now that CC (color correcting) creams have finally hit state side, it's everything I need — a moisturizer, primer, spot concealer, foundation, and sun block in one. And you can always guarantee quality when it comes to Clinique. As for touch ups throughout the day — that heat (meaning the sun, but the competition, too) makes you sweat — Benefit's hydrating Fake Up concealer glides on so smoothly, you don't even need a makeup brush to blend it. Key for the ballpark. And for hanging around a bunch of drunk dudes.
A few other randoms on my list?
+ Alice + Olivia's Ginnie Pleated Skirt: It's pleated (my fave!), it's textured, and it's printed with lemons! Seriously, is it not the cutest or the cutest? Bonus points: Maybe if I buy the skirt, the matching bralette will be motivation to work on my six-pack. (Nah...)
(Alice + Olivia)
+ Each and every single one of Tom Ford's new lip color shines. Because, duh, Tom Ford. This petal pink hue, "Quiver," is the color I mostly have my eye on. Imagine how flirty it'd look paired with the peach blush, above. I'll answer for you: extremely.
+ Nike Wedge Sneakers, because BAMF. Also, I realize they look insane on the Interwebs, but I swear they look awesome in person. Proof to (hopefully) come.
+ ZOMBIES. (I might have a Walking Dead problem.)
Danica promised ya'll diversity, didn't she?
