Summer has always been my favorite time of the year and to be honest, nothing bums me out quite like the arrival of cooler temps and shortened days. Apart from getting excited for Halloween (my favorite holiday), the only thing that seems to dull the loss of another season of sunshine is a chance to switch things up in the clothing department. While bright colors, airy dresses and busy prints are my warm weather staples, I prefer a more streamlined approach come autumn.
After my shopping addiction caused this to happen (ouch), I've taken a much more controlled approach to what I add to my closet. Primary considerations these days are quality, timelessness and versatility, along with a little WWGKW (What would Grace Kelly wear?).
The one thing each item on my wish list has in common? Each piece is something I also wanted to add to my wardrobe last year, which tells me I'm on the right track!
1. YSL's Large "Chabas Chyc" Leather Tote
Eva Longoria is definitely to blame for my fixation with two-tone bags. And although I've been smitten with her Salvatore Ferragamo for some time now, my lust is currently directed towards YSL's totally classic, and for now, strictly aspirational Chabas Chyc tote.
2. Madewell's Silk Graph Paper Boy Shirt
Confession: I never excelled in any classes that required graph paper. Just the same, I can certainly appreciate the clean geometric print of this shirt. Although I usually associate lavender with spring, I'd use this blouse to lighten up the burgundies I'm craving this fall.
3. alice + olivia's Bradley Collar Shirtdress
One of my favorite purchases last season was a simple black Peter Pan-collar sweater. This dress is basically an extension of that much-loved piece. And as if I needed more temptation to make it mine, the way Blair Edie of Atlantic-Pacific wore hers with a classic trench and dash of leopard (two more fall favorites) is almost more than I can handle.
4. J. Crew's Collection Cashmere Isabel Sweatshirt
On the gloomiest of days, the only thing I want to leave the house in is an oversize sweatshirt. And since undergrads are the only people who can pull that off, this gorgeous cashmere sweater is a must.
5. Kookai's Leather Mini Skirt
I used to equate leather skirts with biker chicks and Angelina Jolie, but over the past few seasons they become much more accessible for the rest of us. I'd wear this slightly A-line version with a ladylike blouse to work, or with a slouchy T-shirt on the weekends a la Miranda Kerr.
6. Zara's Dress With Stones on Shoulders
No color has quite the same amount of impact on me as emerald. Whether it's a Hitchock blonde making her grand entrance or Keira Knightley's jaw-dropping Atonement gown, there's something so subtly striking about the shade. Plus I'm a sucker for an affordable price tag and a classic cut.
7. Peugeot's Men's Square Gold-Tone Bracelet Watch
Having worn my oversize Michael Kors watch to death over the past three years, it's time for a change (no pun intended). For my next piece of wrist candy, I envision something equally tough to balance my delicate rings and bracelets, but with a more classic face. Cartier is the ultimate dream, but this watch is much more within reach.
