Denim, Lace, and Florals Oh My + Some Other Things I Have My Eyes on for Spring
(Photos courtesy of Alice + Olivia, Free People, Forever 21) Alice + Olivia Eric Pant, $297; Free People One softly woven jacket, $98; Floral print high-low dress, $22.80.
I, like many others living in New York, am a transplant. I ventured to the Big Apple from my small Midwestern town hoping to follow my dreams and aspirations — or something inspirational like that. But with me I brought two things: a weird tendency to say y'all. (Seriously, I don't know where that came from. I'm from Missouri.), and my love of nature.
With those two tricks up my sleeves, this spring I'm finding myself drawn to pieces I can wear while walking down the streets of New York and while walking on the banks of the creek at home in Missouri. Call it urban meets bohemian, if you will.
So with that in mind, here is just a random assortment of what's caught my fancy this spring.
(Alice + Olivia) Alice + Olivia Eric Pant, $297.You can't be from the Midwest and not own a good pair of jeans. This season I'm particularly drawn to light washes. Call it a flashback to my Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club days, but I'm really digging lighter denim this spring. I'm also looking forward to embracing a wider leg. Let's be real, aren't we all getting a little tired of skinny jeans? I can't wait to try this chambray pant by Alice + Olivia.
But let's not forget the good old denim jacket. Yes, my friends, denim jackets are back. The last time I sported a denim jacket was probably in the 7th grade when I begged my mom to buy me a Hollister jean jacket. But alas, she bought me the Old Navy one instead. Clearly, it was the end of the world.
(J Brand) 403 Slim fitted jacket, $260.
But this spring, I've put my past behind me, and I'm venturing into the world of the denim jacket once again. I'm thinking this one by J Brand might fit the bill. It has a funky coating on the sleeves and collar that makes the denim appear like leather. I like to think of it as a denim-and-leather jacket hybrid — you know, for those non-committal types. Ahem.
(Topshop) Topshop lace panel dress, $92.
Seriously, what's spring without some lace? From flowing dresses to breezy jackets, there's a good chance I'll be sporting lace in some form every day this spring. I particularly have my eye on this Topshop lace panel dress with a high-low hem. But let's not rule out this quirky lace dress from Kensie. I just love the orange color. So perfect for a day in the sun!
(Kensie) Kensie floral lace dress, $99.
I'm also insanely crazy about this Free People woven jacket with crocheted sleeves. OK, so maybe I just want to look like this girl and run through a field of flowers, but the jacket is super cute, too.
(Free People) Free People One softly woven jacket, $98.
(Forever 21) Floral print high-low dress, $22.80.
Florals are clearly a spring staple, particularly, large-print florals. In fact, in my book, the bigger and more obnoxious — errr bolder — the better.
I'm super in love with this floral print high-low dress from Forever 21. And with a price tag of $22.80, I may even splurge and add this floral racerback to my closet, as well!
I also have major plans for this floral maxi from Free People. I'm thinking me, this dress, a pair of cowboy boots, and Central Park. Now that's the life.
(Free People) New Romantics flower bomb maxi dress, $350.
4) Some other things I have my eyes on:
A patchwork dress:
(Marc Jacobs) Molly check dress, $548.
OK, so I know it's not 1993, and I know the grunge scene is dead — may you rest in peace — but this patchwork dress from Marc by Marc Jacobs is so cool that I may just bust out my old Smashing Pumpkins CD. OK, fine. I'll be honest. I listened to the Spice Girls and not Smashing Pumpkins.
A pair of lace-up sandals:
(Sseko) Sseko Caramel Sandal, $51.
I'm really digging these lace-up sandals by Sseko. I've actually had my eye on them for a few years but truthfully have been too nervous to make the purchase. Those straps are really intimidating, OK? But after reading the company's mission to help generate income to send women in Africa to school — and also a quick "how-to" of tying the sandals — I feel like this spring may be the time for me to make my purchase!
A pair of legit headphones:
In preparation for my concert-filled summer — yes, I'm going to the Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z concert in Yankee Stadium, I know you were dying to know — I'm looking for a new pair of headphones, so I can blast JT's new album "The 20/20 Experience." I'm thinking these Frends Taylor headphones from Urban Outfitters might do the trick.
(Urban Outfitters) Frends Taylor headphones, $200.
But really, if I'm being honest, there's only one thing I want for spring: a smile from Grumpy Cat.
I asked, and he said, "No."
Oh well, there's always next year.
