It's A Step Forward For Inclusivity
It's an even bigger step forward than you might think, considering that Jenny Han, who wrote the eponymous, best-selling YA novel, really had to fight for an Asian American actress to play the lead. She told People that she "turned down initial film offers because some studios wanted Lara Jean [whose character is a hapa, half-white, half-Korean] to be played by a white actress. 'It was a difficult position,' [Han said]. 'You have to say no again and again.'"

But eventually Will Smith's production company, Overbrook Entertainment, gave a big, resounding yes — lucky for all of us, for Han's initial vision, and for inclusivity in Hollywood. The industry may be making moves at a glacial place, but making moves it is.
