Fashion Trend Report: Pleats

This season's micro-folds are soft, swingy and just right for summer.

We blame our aversion to pleats on an adolescence spent in a dowdy school-uniform skirt (green, starchy and yes, aggressively pleated). But one glimpse at this season's flock of fluttery folds and it might be time to reconsider our stance.

The look was literally all over the spring runways, from Victoria Beckham's short and flouncy styles to the brushstroke-splattered folds at Celine. There were sheer, ethereal pleats at Jonathan Saunders and futuristic metallic pleats at Proenza Schouler (the latter spotted on everyone from Rooney Mara and Constance Jablonski to Toni Collette and Anna Wintour).

The common theme among these silk and chiffon styles? They all felt light, breezy and graceful—perfect for a spin on the red carpet or even on a summer wedding dance floor.

If a floor-sweeping gown is a little too fancy for you, try a floaty pleated skirt or top instead. Shop our picks, below.
