Fashion Trend Report: Shirt Dressing
Designers love to tweak a classic, and this year they directed their transformative talents onto the white collared shirt.
There are some closet staples that have the almost magical ability to make one look dressed. There are even rarer wardrobe must-haves that not only do that, but also seem to land in the closets of every major fashion star despite their vastly different style personas. The white collared shirt is one of those items.
Now, before visions of starched, boxy white button-ups come to mind, review the Spring 2014 collections from DKNY, Carven, Carolina Herrera, Rebecca Minkoff, and Burberry Prorsum, among others, where designers gave white collared shirts new life through creative tailoring, embellishment and inventive styling.
Necklines were opened, hems and sleeves were shortened (or lengthened), layers were styled, and embroidery and sparkle were employed to give this staple a makeover worthy of 2014.
The wonderful thing about this trend is that it's easy to pull off. Try purchasing a white collared shirt in a new silhouette or opting for short sleeves. Be creative with layering—throw one under a dress or leave it untucked and wear it over a mini skirt. For more inspiration, check out the ways celebrities have been wearing this trend.
