Fashion Trend Report: Gold Chain Necklaces
Once the exclusive territory of mobsters and hip hop legends, this accessory is getting a high-fashion makeover.
It wasn't too long ago that seeing a thick gold chain brought back memories of things such as Scarface, Mr. T and '80s rap groups. The words "high fashion" didn't exactly come to mind. And yet, here we are reconsidering those flashy ropes in the wake of stunning runway shows from Lanvin, Balmain and Rodarte that featured re-imagined versions of this heavy metal accessory.
Tightly wound, choker-style, strung with mega-size pendants or layered for a downtown-chic look, these chains are less '80s and more fashion-forward. They can be worn to dress up—and toughen up—just about anything from a little black dress to a T-shirt and jeans. Sure-fire evidence that the trend is catching on is the fact that we've spotted celebs—everyone from model Miranda Kerr to singer Gwen Stefani and actress Taraji P. Henson—sporting their own chains everywhere from the street to the red carpet.
