When I Love Lucy premiered in October of 1951, America got their first taste of just how beloved a female TV character could be. Not only is the character Lucy McGillicuddy Ricardo regarded as one of the funniest characters of all time, but it was the first time that a woman could be the star in television series and hold her own. She may have had her hot Cuban husband and best friend, Ethel, at her side, but it was Lucy’s show and she called the shots.

Since then there have been a handful of female TV characters that have resonated with audiences. But the problem with television is that a series runs its course, and is eventually replaced by something else. Good thing for Netflix, huh?
