It's been nearly 24 hours since Joanna Mastroianni debuted her spring 2013 collection at New York Fashion Week, and we're still dreaming about the gorgeous updos from her show.
Dying to re-create the twisted topknots and sky-high bouffants, we asked Mastroianni's head stylist Edward Tricomi, founder and co-owner of Warren-Tricomi salons, for all the deets on how to get the look.
Despite the intricate appearance, we were suprised to find the styles are shockingly simple—the only tools you need are bobby pins and hairspray! Here are Tricomi's easy-to-manage steps for getting the big, voluminous 'dos at home.
Look 1: Totally Twisted
Step 1: Brush through the hair and pull it back into a high ponytail. Secure with a bungee elastic.
Step 2: Gently twist the ponytail until it begins to coil. Loosely pin the hair into place as you go.
Step 3: Style hair into a bun by wrapping it around the base of the ponytail, then move it off-center to create a more interesting, abstract look.
Step 4: Pin hair into place and finish with a layer of hairspray.
Look 2: Super Stacked
Step 1: Begin this topknot the same way as the style above. Pull hair up into a high ponytail and secure with a bungee elastic.
Step 2: Again, gently twist the ponytail until it begins to coil. Wrap hair around the base of the ponytail again and again securing with pins.
Step 3: Twist the hair left at the end of the pony and wrap it around the entire bun, tucking it under in the back. Finish with hairspray.
Look 3: Higher Than Heaven
Step 1: To create fullness and height, tease hair in sections with a Mason Pearson brush. Tease section by section to get the big hair effect. Spray each section with hairspray as you go.
Step 2: Push hair back and gently brush front pieces over the teased section. Add another layer of hairspray.
Step 3: Gather hair in the back and twist up and under the teased section to create the up-do. Secure with pins.
Edward's Expert Tip: If you don’t have the length to create this style—fake it! Models wore hair pieces at the show to add fullness.(If you're nervous about hair extensions, see our defense of them here!)
Which look is your favorite? We think they're all such a fun and funky twist on the classic topknot! Tell us in the comments, will you be giving these a try a home?
