Who: Monica Mange Johnson, federal prosecutor turned co-founder of social fitness app BurnThis.
Best fitness advice ever received: "You will never regret working out so move everyday. Even when you are exhausted or tired and don't feel like it, make yourself do something. It doesn't have to be a two hour workout. You don't have to be dripping sweat every time. Don't psych yourself out. It's the little workout victories—like walking or running outside for just a couple of moments—that make a difference. Even if you can only work out for a few minutes each day, you will always feel better because you give your body that sacred time to move. "
Favorite post or pre-workout snack: "Quest bars ($25)! They're delicious. My favorite flavor is chocolate chip cookie dough. You feel like you are eating cookie dough batter. It feels decadent but is, in reality, a healthy treat."
Favorite workout gear: "Whether I'm taking a boutique fitness class, running on the treadmill, or lifting weights, an indispensable workout item for me is a good pair of running shoes. I just purchased the Nike Zoom in charcoal grey with fluorescent yellow heels ($130). You feel like you are literally walking on air and I feel it enhancing my performance every time I work out. I also am loving my Athleta Kinsley sweater ($89). The one I have is in beautiful neutral heather grey and dresses up my 'go-to' daily uniform, which is always workout gear. It is especially great for the Venice Beach, where BurnThis is headquartered, which still alternates between beautiful beach weather and cloudy, colder days."
Gym bag beauty essentials: "Honestly it would be my 32 oz. Nalgene bottle ($12)—I don't know if its the design or what but its super conducive to making me drinking 32 oz. of water several times a day which keeps me feeling hydrated and energized no matter what the day has in store for me. It is also way better on the environment than plastic bottles."
Go-to Workout: Abs and Stair Climber Combo (30 minutes)
"I'm all about the abdominal workouts having had a baby a year ago. If I am not at Pilates Platinum in Venice working my butt off on the reformer, I am at Equinox at Angela's 4x4 class or working out on my own. My favorite quickie workout is a combination ab/stair climber workout that is about half an hour long. I love it because it allows me to break a sweat without the commitment of a full hour on days when there is too much to do."(Art by Kristina Rodulfo)
