But for those with fast-paced lives, the chance to chill (especially if it's on the beach, doing nothing with friends and family) can sometimes feel more stressful than maintaining our non-stop work routines. In the spirit of summer holidays, we chatted with New York life coach Julie Holmes about stress and how to reduce it. Here are her five favorite tips to de-stress and relax this summer.

1) "Meditate, even if you only have five minutes. It's important to take the time to relax and literally think about nothing, or visualize your most peaceful self."

2) "Exercise—a great way to reduce stress. Whether it's an intense, vigorous workout, yoga or a simple long walk, it's helpful to relax the body and mind."

3) "Journaling. Twenty minutes a day of writing about whatever's on your mind. It's good to organize your thoughts and get them on paper. If you're not sure what to write about, you can use the 20 minutes to vent, prioritize your to-do list or simply make a list of all the things you are grateful for."

4) "Unplug. As helpful as technology is for so many things in our lives, it can also cause more chaos and stress. Take an hour a day to turn off your phone, the TV and the computer to allow yourself to connect and engage with the real world."

5) "Schedule. Make sure to add all of the above into your schedule. Know when it's time to work and when it's time for play. When you schedule your downtime, you're not allowed to think about anything other than what you are doing in that moment."
