Lorna Jane Clarkson Spills Her Wellness Secrets
As the Australian activewear mogul releases her first cookbook, she opens up about clean eating, necessary indulgences and how she keeps a healthy glow.
Lorna Jane Clarkson is something of a fashion and fitness icon in her native Australia, where her namesake activewear brand, Lorna Jane, is the country's largest. Now, with a rapidly growing retail empire under her belt (including almost 30 US stores) and an impressive list of celeb fans, including Naomi Watts, Jessica Alba and Miranda Kerr, Clarkson is adding cookbook author to her impressive resume. In honor of the release of Nourish: The Fit Woman's Cookbook ($45), we spoke to the wonder woman about her favorite foods, daily rituals and commitment to feeding her body well.
Your motto is “move, nourish, believe.” What does "nourish" mean to you? "No doubt, the food that goes into your body is fundamental to what it means to nourish; however, for me, ‘nourish’ is bigger than that. When I think of nourishing, I think of filling my life with good food, good thoughts, good people and great work. I believe that all of these things work together in order to allow me to think, feel and be at my best in life—for myself and for my family!"
So how do you nourish yourself on a daily basis? "I nourish with whole foods and I move my body every day—no excuses. I love the way it makes me feel and the energy that it gives me. I also make it a point to always take time to meditate. It allows me to still my mind and helps me prepare for the challenges that I might face in the day ahead. Also, walking my dog, Roger, and spending quality time with my husband, Bill, is something that I am unwilling to compromise on. I simply love my time with them and I think it’s important to always find time to do the things you love."
What’s your favorite way to break a sweat these days? "Right now I am most enjoying a combination of strength training, yoga and cardio."
Now let’s talk food. Have you always been a clean, mindful eater? Or was there ever a time you fell into the trap of fad diets? "I can’t say that I have ever really ‘dieted.’ I’ve always listened to my body and given it what it needs to feel at its best. My philosophy with food is to eat according to what you feel your body needs for the day ahead—not being greedy, but not depriving yourself either."
Makes total sense. So what will we always find in your fridge? "I always keep my fridge stocked with loads of fresh fruit, vegetables and lean protein. My ‘go-to’ items tend to include blueberries, spinach and broccoli—my two favorite leafy greens—free-range, organic chicken breast; and free-range, cruelty-free, organic eggs. You’ll also always find a pitcher of lemon water and a bag of Campos coffee."
You’re a big proponent of following an alkaline diet. Can you tell us more about the benefits of eating alkaline foods? "The foods we eat can affect how acidic or alkaline we become, and keeping your body in an alkaline state is so important to your overall health. It will improve your mood, energy levels and sleep quality, not to mention it helps reduce aches and pains, headaches and chronic disease. In order to keep your body at its health-promoting, alkaline-best, you should be drinking plenty of water and eating foods such as pineapple, watermelon, spinach, broccoli, lentils, seeds and nuts, onion and sweet potato. The list goes on, but these are a few of my favorites."
When it comes to shopping for all of the veggies and fruits you recommend, how important is it that we stick to organic produce? "When I shop, I try to buy organic whenever I can, but honestly, it is more important to me that the produce is fresh, in season and locally grown."
Do you ever let yourself indulge in not-so-healthy foods and beverages? "Of course! We just celebrated Bill’s birthday with some cake that I am pretty sure was not 'Nourish’-approved. I enjoy eating a little dessert now and again, cappuccinos with my friends and the occasional cocktail to celebrate a special occasion. However, for me personally, my all-time favorite food indulgence would have to be chocolate. A couple squares of dark chocolate or a piece of my homemade chocolate bark and I am in heaven."
You’ve always got such a healthy, natural glow. What's your secret? "Because I like to be outdoors, sunscreen would have to be at the top of my list. I wear 30-plus sunscreen every day, no exceptions. Also, a light exfoliating cleanser is key! I exfoliate almost every day because I find it gives my skin radiance that regular cleansing never has. And I can’t not mention coconut oil. I love it! I use it as makeup remover, cleanser, moisturizer and even as a weekly hair treatment."
