Inspiring Women: This Entrepreneur Will Help You Start Your Dream Creative Business
Alice Rossiter started Alice's Table to help women (and men!) start their own flower-arranging gig.
Have you always dreamed of starting your own creative business but life kept getting in the way? After all, working full-time and/or raising a family doesn't exactly leave a lot of time in the day to focus on a new passion project. Well, that's where Alice's Table comes in.
Alice Rossiter started Alice's Table as a means for busy women to launch their own flower-arranging business. It's a unique model and we love the way Rossiter is bringing women together to learn new skills and also enriching their lives with gorgeous flowers and a paycheck. Even if you're not looking to boost your career, you can learn something from the entrepreneur and her place in the start-up community. Here's what Alice had to say about Alice's Table, what she sees for the future, and what living beautifully means to her.
Livingly: Tell us a little about Alice's Table.
Alice Rossiter: Alice's Table brings women together to learn new skills, and live a social and creative lifestyle through flower arranging! Modern women don’t have time to be Martha, they need lifestyle delivered. So, we developed our Event Exec program to empower and enable women to launch their own flexible and creative businesses by hosting fun, flower arranging classes across the country.
Whether you have a passion for floral design or simply love picking out blooms during your weekly shop, the Alice’s Table Event Exec program or one of our classes, is a great way to transform your love into an income, a way to meet new people, or simply do something creative. Who doesn’t love a girl’s night out?
Why flower arranging?
Flowers bring everyone joy, will never go out of style, and women across generations are interested in them. I also wanted to provide women with a business that wasn’t based on pushing products. Instead, our Execs deliver lifestyle through creative and unique experiences. Our model is built for growth; cooking, crafts, the possibilities are endless! We believe that anyone can be a thriving entrepreneur with the right tools and community!
What kind of woman makes a great Alice's Table Exec?
I founded Alice’s Table because I consistently recognized a need for flexible and creative jobs for women. There are so many women who want to work, but don’t want to (or can’t) commit to the 9-5. Our Exec program is designed for the woman who has always wanted to become an entrepreneur, but is hesitant to take the leap because of all the nitty gritty things that can come along with an entrepreneurial endeavor. We have super successful millennials with side hustles and moms living their “mompreneur” dreams.
Our Exec platform trains, supports, and provides women with all the resources they need to have a successful business, while the Alice’s Table HQ handles the back office work; payment processing, flower ordering, customer care, and more.
What I really love is that you get out what you put in. A woman can choose to make her Alice’s Table business a full career, or stick to working nights and weekends. It’s a business your way, on your own schedule! Anyone who has the drive to be an entrepreneur and who loves to be creative is perfect for the role.
What are three things that got you to where you are today?
1. Never giving up! I have lost track of how many times I have heard no or been rejected. Success is the ability to keep reaching for what you want.
2. Family and friends are the foundation for me, I could not have gotten this far without people on the other end of the line to support me when I am down and celebrate when things go right.
3. Hard work with a side of rosé is the secret sauce. You have to work extremely hard to build a business, harder than I ever believed was possible, but then you also have to have a moment to relax with a nice glass of rosé.
Where do you see yourself and Alice's Table in 5 years? 10?
In 5 years Alice’s Table will have expanded beyond just flowers. We are on a mission to help people become entrepreneurs and launch their businesses. Starting a company is unattainable for a lot of people because they don't have an idea, are afraid of the plunge without a community backing them, or it is cost prohibitive. We are on a mission to change this! In ten years we will have made great progress toward democratizing entrepreneurship.
Where do I fit into this journey - failing forward all along the way. Oh and I am getting married in September, so then I will be a married workaholic!
What is a hard lesson you've learned from starting your own company?
I have learned how to handle the roller coaster of entrepreneurship. It is extremely challenging to ride the wave of ups and downs. I’ve learned to take a break when I need it, and come back the next morning with even more energy than the day before.
Separating emotions from my business is hard; my business is my baby. There’s a huge learning curve to constructively channeling my drive into effective management of the business.
What is the key to work-life balance in your own life?
I am still figuring this out! I have to take time away from the business to make clear strong decision so that is a driver for balance for me.
What advice do you wish you had gotten before starting your own business?
You always think - when this happens everything will be great and then you achieve the goal and you already have your sights set on something else, or the rug gets pulled out from under you in another area. There is no arrival point as an entrepreneur there is just the journey.
What is the best part of your day?
My job is making other women successful - we get to see them thrive and succeed. No matter if an Exec shares the launch of her Instagram account or a sold out event, I am there to celebrate that victory with her. I had a dream a little over two years ago to create a community that fostered entrepreneurship and creativity, and now it’s a reality. Knowing that what I do makes a difference every day, is the best part.
At Livingly, our motto is "live life beautifully." What does living beautifully mean to you?
To me this means that you have to follow your heart and find the happy in everyday. Doing what you love allows you to share your happiness with others. I am a big believer that supporting others and seeing them thrive is the key to a beautiful life.
