When Ericka Hart was diagnosed with breast cancer, she underwent a double mastectomy, followed by reconstructive surgery. But while undergoing reconstruction, her surgeon ran into a wall: They had no reference pictures for reconstruction scars on black women. Even a quick Google search gave zero results on how those scars would look on black skin, and that made her determined to change that reality.

She decided she wasn't going to be invisible, and her Instagram is a platform that not only challenges how breast cancer survivors are portrayed, but how we view and embrace our bodies.

One of her captions: "Pain is important: how we evade it, how we succumb to it, how we deal with it, how we transcend it.” - Audre Lorde
