Simple Styling Trick to Try: Wear Black Over-the-Knee Socks in Lieu of Tights

When it's absolutely, positively freezing outside, reaching for a pair of opaque black tights is pretty much a no-brainer, whether you're wearing them underneath pants for an added layer of warmth or covering up your gams beneath a short skirt. But when there's just a slight nip in the air—and you don't want to go bare-legged or wear a pair of printed sheer tights—black over-the-knee socks happen to be a quite stylish alternative.

While older generations might associate OTK socks with coquettish lingerie (think lacy corsets and garter belts) and twentysomethings tend to link them to The Craft, Clueless, and Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time" video, they're currently enjoying a street-style revival. The younger, hipper set have brought the thigh-baring look back to the block, and are wearing them with several different style trends to boot.
Case in point: Utterly adorable YouTube superstar Bethany Mota went for girly-glam by wearing hers with a blazer, a flouncy skirt, and a sparkly crop top. Brit It girl Alexa Chung pulled on a pair to complete her part-boho, part-rocker festival outfit. Then there's Emily Browning, who put a playful spin on ladylike when she wore a sheer style with a long-sleeved sweater-knit onesie.

Translation: If you haven't already, you might want to add this versatile legwear to your hosiery collection. Here are three pairs we'll have in heavy rotation come spring.
