After smallpox breakouts and syphilis outbreaks in the 18th century, many people were left with marks and scars on their faces as a result of their health ailments. In order to hide those small imperfections, women started wearing beauty patches over their scars, in the shapes of hearts, stars, and crescent moons. It caught on and evolved in such a way that even the way you placed the sticker on your face had a meaning behind it: Depending where you put it on your face, it let the public know if you were single, married, or currently courting!
