The word pannier derives from the French word "panier," meaning "basket," and that describes the 17th and 18th Century trend perfectly. The size of your pannier was meant to signal your social standing - the more noble you were, the larger your hoop skirt. That social brag was worth the annoyance of walking through doorways and finding space on couches.
