7. Your airline might pleasantly surprise you with a free seat.
It’s a hot topic whether or not to purchase a seat for your traveler under the age of two. Car seat advocates argue kids should be properly restrained in a car seat as much as possible during a flight. While this is true from a safety standpoint, it’s not always realistic for your budget or restless toddler. If you opt not to buy a seat for your little one, airlines will sometimes give you a free seat if it’s available without charge. Check-in early and make nice with the person at the counter. If a free seat doesn’t materialize, you can still check your car seat at the gate.
