13. Be prepared to receive conflicting advice
There are many different schools of thought on how to help a nursing mother. From nipple shields to cutting tongue ties, even trained lactation consultants may have differing advice. If something isn't working or doesn't feel right, seek a second and even third opinion.

With my first daughter, one consultant wanted me to use a nipple shield, which turned out to be unnecessary and could have hindered my desire to continue nursing over time. Likewise, with my second daughter, two lactation consultants recommended cutting her tongue tie, while her pediatricians had the wisdom to see she would stretch it with time. While the first advice may have worked in some situations, I'm grateful it didn't affect the outcome for my family.
