14. Educate yourself about tongue ties
Tongue ties are an increasingly common diagnosis when it comes to nursing challenges. If a baby's tongue is unable to extend far enough, he will not be able to latch properly, causing pain for mom and possible challenges with getting enough milk. If you think a tongue tie may be preventing you from nursing properly, get an exam and do your research.

Even different lactation consultants and doctors may disagree about whether the tie needs to be cut. Ultimately, you will need to make the decision as a parent, and the procedure is reported to be quick and easy. If you decide to wait it out, be prepared to give it some time. Upon the advice of two pediatricians, we waited with our daughter, and while I'm glad we did, nursing was painful for me for six weeks.
