Like shoe shopping, watching episodes of Mad Men can quickly turn into an addiction. While fans of the AMC series are juggling mixed emotions for the upcoming season—excitement it’s almost here yet sadness it’s the last one—fashion fiends can find solace in the costume designer’s latest project: a collaboration with Shoes of Prey, an e-tailer that allows you to customize your own shoes. This month, Janie Bryant unveiled the new collaboration—and her first footwear collection—boasting seven different formal styles ($169–$269), which each come in a number of different color and fabric options to choose from. We caught up with the Emmy Award winner about personal style and inspirations.
It’s sort of like when I watch my work on the screen. It is that creative gratification to see your work live—and ultimately on lots and lots of pairs of beautiful ladies’ feet.” —Janie Bryant
What is your favorite style of shoe? “Well first of all, any high heel because I have the philosophy, ‘The higher the better.’ I’ve always loved heels. But I would say high-heel sandals, especially since I live in Los Angeles. I wear high-heel sandals year-round."

How would you describe your personal style? “I change moods a lot, but the one thing that really is consistent is that I love to be feminine and pretty with a little bit of edge. I may be inspired by different decades and I’ll get into wearing different vintage pieces from different eras, but I really do love feminine pieces. And also, even if my mood changes from frilly dresses to bohemian, flowing caftans, it’s all about having the perfect fit for me too.”

Does the runway influence your designs? “It really depends on what the project is. For Mad Men, no because my research is vintage research. I go to old movies [as well as] catalogues, magazines and photographs of the period. For designing this shoe collection, I would look at trends and what’s going on in the modern world too because I think that’s really important. And then, it sort of extended out from there to create a collection for Shoes of Prey that was really luxurious [with] really beautiful jewel-tone colors mixed with the very rich black [fabrics] of suede and patent leather. I really wanted to incorporate the jewel tones; they’re always my favorite.”

I had a couple of shoes in the Mad Men x Banana Republic collection, but this is really the first collection that I’ve done. I think the most challenging thing was to find that cohesive element. It really is about finding the theme within the collection. It really came together with using the snakeskin with each of the shoes, except for the bridal shoes [which were inspired by one of her soon-to-be wed friends she is also designing a gown for], but then incorporating the leathers, the suedes and the glitter.”

Now that the collection is finally here, what was the most rewarding part of the experience? “To be able to see them made. It’s sort of like when I watch my work on the screen. It is that creative gratification to see your work live—and ultimately on lots and lots of pairs of beautiful ladies’ feet.”
