It's right there in the theme song!

To try and deny or ignore the colossal effect pop culture has on us would be futile and silly. Pop culture: It's fun! We love it! And it's actually pretty important, too. Representation of yourself, your friends, your family — or people like you/them — is something you want to see in the books, movies, television shows, music, etc. that are supposed to reflect what our society looks like. Art imitates life, life imitates art, and so on. It's an imperfect system, to be sure, one that's constantly evolving and improving (we hope), and it's so important to be vocal when you consume a slice of pop culture that you like (and equally as important to highlight the rotten pieces of the pop culture pie, some of which you're sure to come across).

Something that I'm constantly looking for in my pop culture pie is a filling that includes a hefty helping/representation of female friendship (this pie metaphor is really losing ground, so I'm going to drop it now, mmmkay?). I love my lady friends — they help inform who I am, and so I like to see strong groups or pairs of female friends on TV, in movies, and in books. They can serve as role models, counteract the Hollywood myth that romance = everything, and also help reflect reality. So, in a new feature for Livingly, I'm highlighting a girl gang from pop culture that I'd definitely want to hang with, and what makes them so great. The spotlight will be on a different group/pair each time, so make sure to check back! This week, I'm trading in the 30 degree New York weather for some sunshine and warmth in Miami. That's right, I'm talking' 'bout the ladies of The Golden Girls.

They would mock you...lovingly

Sophia, Dorothy, Rose, and Blanche were always teasing each other and making jokes at one another's expense. But what's a friendship without some good-natured ribbing? At the end of the day, all the jokes were born out of a deep love and fondness between the four roommates and friends.

They would support you in your crazy schemes

Remember when Blanche was convinced Mel the Zipper King was dead in his apartment and wanted to break in (well, with her key) to check on him? When Sophia wanted to run a marathon and Rose wanted to skydive? When Dorothy...well, she wasn't super prone to crazy schemes, but still. If a golden girl has a wacky plan in mind, you better believe the other ladies are going to support her (while cracking jokes, of course — see above).

They would support you with crazy schemes of their own

Not only would Dorothy, Sophia, Blanche, and Rose support your crazy schemes — they would show their own particular brand of support by coming up with and enacting crazy schemes of their own! When Rose was depressed about a dating dry spell? Blanche (and later, Dorothy) invented a man named Isaac Newton and carried on a brief epistolary romance with their BFF — just to show her someone out there cared. Sure, it's pretty weird and maybe even kind of messed up...but it's creative and pretty sweet, when you think about it.

They would keep you young at heart

The golden girls were in their 50s, 60s, and 80s for the duration of the show. But hot damn, they were young at heart — age is just a number, after all — and they would keep you loving and living life as heartily as they did.

They have the potential to become family...legally

5 Reasons the Golden Girls Would Make Great Best Friends

After living together for so long, the ladies of The Golden Girls were basically like family (well, Dorothy and Sophia were literally family)...and in the end, Blanche and Dorothy actually became family when (spoiler alert) Dorothy married Blanche's uncle. What a happy ending, eh?

The Golden Girls is a classic; an awesome TV show not only for its positive female friendship portrayal but also because it is/was a really funny and successful show about "old" women. The ladies weren't really that old, but they were old for TV — and certainly old to be the absolute focus of a TV show. So, three cheers for Blanche, Rose, Dorothy, and Sophia, and three cheers for having great friends in your golden years!
