Tuesday Tip: This is the Only Temperature You Should Set Your Flatiron To

(Source: Thinkstock, ghd; Art by Tanya Leigh Washington)Even though we're well aware that heat causes damage to our hair, that doesn't stop us from cranking up the temperature dial on our flatirons to the max—the hotter the tool, the straighter the strands, right?

Well it turns out that mode of thinking actually isn't correct, according to ghd chief technology officer and Cambridge scientist Dr. Tim Moore, who found through his research that there's one degree in particular that serves as the gold standard (in fact, the British hair-tool company's newest styling device, the Eclipse, is pre-programmed to only operate at this temperature).

Read on to get the most out of your flatiron—and save yourself from split ends—just by tweaking the temperature.

The most effective and safe temperature to style hair is 365°F—lower, and the style won’t last; too much heat and you can damage the hair. Our research shows that even heat smooths and closes the hair cuticles, increasing its resilience to breakage and creating a glossy shine. Styling at the right heat constantly means you can style even faster and have longer-lasting results, in just one stroke."
