Starved Rock, Illinois
If you're looking for a cozy fall retreat with plenty of foliage, Midwesterners will point you towards Starved Rock, Illinois, just two hours outside of Chicago. The trails have waterfalls, trees changing colors, and campgrounds for those who want to make the most out of nature.

After a fun day of hiking, you can head over to the Starved Rock Lodge, which has the biggest fireplace in the state. Grab a glass of red wine or a hot toddy, and unwind in your hiking boots by the crackling logs.

Then if there's still some time and you're feeling like some good old fashioned Halloween activities, head over to the Highwood suburb and check out Highwood Pumpkin Fest, where thousands of jack o' lanterns are lit to put you in the fall mood.
