Split, Croatia
An ancient town on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, Split has a working fortress in its city center that was built back in the 4th century. Named "Diocletian's Palace," you can explore the fort city, which is not only packed with historical monuments, but also five star restaurants, cafes, charming boutiques, and jazz bars.

Going to Split in September is perfect because it's warm enough to still rent a boat and go swimming off the Dalmatian coast, but you won't be sweating buckets if you stay outside for more than an hour.
