2012: The #FreeTheNipple Campaign Begins
The #FreeTheNipple campaign was created in 2012 during pre-production of a 2014 film of the same name, filmed by Lina Esco, who created a documentary of herself running through the streets of New York City topless. The campaign itself questions the societal double standard that men can go shirtless in public without being sexualized or shamed, while the same cannot be said for women, to say the least. It argues for cultural acceptance of women "freeing" their nipples in public and on social media.
