'Suits' Star Meghan Markle's Style On and Off Set
From the small screen to the computer screen, the actress shares her fashionable insights with us—and all, thanks to her recently-launched lifestyle website.
She might portray an intriguing (albeit feisty) paralegal on USA's Suits, which debuted its fourth season last night, but Meghan Markle is just as fascinating—and fashionable—off screen. For starters, she has the brains to back up her beauty: Markle majored in both theater and international relations at Northwestern University before pursuing an acting career (which she also kicks butt at by the way—she also appears in the film Horrible Bosses).
Last month, the accomplished actress launched a lifestyle blog, called The Tig, to showcase her well-versed palate in the world of food, fashion, beauty and travel. She even calls upon famous friends, most recently fellow actress Emmy Rossum and designer Wes Gordon, to offer their taste-making two cents.
In between all of her exciting endeavors, the stylish star caught us up on her latest passion project and what we can expect to see from her character this season.
How would you describe your personal style? "It's evolving: a mix of relaxed chic, inspired by growing up in LA, wearing a uniform of jeans and T-shirts, to now embracing more tailored and interesting pieces. I'm still very classic in my choices and choose basics that are changeable from night to day. You will usually see me in jeans, a silk blouse with flats for day and a sexy heel for evening."
Can you see any similarities between your wardrobe and your character Rachel Zane’s? "My personal style informs Rachel's wardrobe and vice versa. We both wear solids and classic tones: whites, camels, dusty rose tones and black. Most of the jewelry for Rachel are my own personal [pieces] so there's a feeling of history. Jolie, our wardrobe designer, and I call it 'heirloom chic,' which makes me laugh. She also calls me 'the little fox,' so with that said there is a sexiness in the way Rachel dresses. Also, just like Rachel. I love a monogram—don't get me started on that."
How else are you able to incorporate your style into your on-screen wardrobe? "It's a very collaborative process and, as the seasons have progressed, my sensibility has definitely influenced Rachel's wardrobe. But I am always mindful of the differences. I love ripped jeans, whereas a Zane [Rachel's family name of NY bravado and prestige] would never wear something like that. There is always more polish with Rachel than what you will find with me."
Who are your style icons and why? "I have always loved Gwyneth Paltrow's style—it's classic. She chooses pieces that are right for her body, but she also celebrates emerging designers and doesn't fuss too much over the hair and makeup. I love that she always looks comfortable in her clothes, as chic as they may be."
What are your packing essentials? "When traveling, I can't live without NUXE lip balm ($19), which is easily the best I've ever used; my Hermes cashmere-and-silk scarf that was a recent gift and feels like a big hug when I'm traveling; my Tatcha hydrating serum ($95); and tea tree oil, which I use for cuts, skin irritations, bug bites, occasional blemishes—it's awesome."
What can we expect to see from your character this season? "Season four is amazing for Rachel. I am honestly so proud to see her get back to her roots and become more of the woman we met in the pilot episode. Having spent, now, almost four years playing her, I root for her like she's a friend. This season, Rachel juggles law school, working at the firm and the complexities that come with being in a relationship and trying to balance everything. She handles things with so much grace, but life throws her a very unexpected curve ball. And I think fans will love seeing how that rocks the boat—I know I do!"
