Actress Autumn Reeser Walks Us Through Her Wardrobe
Snag the stylish star's easy-going threads—and outlook.
The life of an actress is glamorous for many reasons, but our favorite is that they get to play dress-up on a regular basis. Autumn Reeser, who you might remember as Summer’s nemesis on The OC, has been generous enough to share select items from her closet through Threadflip, a consignment app we recently spotlighted. "It's so simple and visually appealing to shop," she told us about the experience. "I was delighted to find it was just as easy and low-stress to sell my items there." The stylish star, who offers up even more wardrobe inspiration on her blog, Move Lifestyle, also offered us insight into the surprisingly simple style she's established throughout her career. Read on to see why we're dying to try on her easy-going threads—and outlook on life.
How often do you clear out and add to your closet? "Pieces from shows, gift bags and friends slowly make their way into my closet over the course of a year, so every spring I do a thorough sweep to clear out anything that I just plain don't wear. Often I find that the idea of something is more appealing than the actual wearing of it. If I get through 12 months with a piece never making a trip out of my closet, I can easily conclude that it's just not right for me, however much I hoped it could be."
How would you describe your personal style? "Partly because of my petite frame, I mainly gravitate towards a gamine style—skinny jeans, flats, light cotton shirts—and I also love to incorporate vintage pieces."
What are some of your go-to labels and retailers? "Madewell is my absolute favorite for basics right now; I'm loving Everlane for slightly more elegant pieces; and then I always supplement with vintage from Shareen to make things more interesting."
How has it evolved throughout your career—and since becoming a mom? "My time is at a premium so I'm definitely more of a minimalist now than I've ever been. At the beginning of my career, I could be drawn into just about any trend. I was so young and really trying to learn about myself by seeing what fashions I felt comfortable in. And because of that experimentation, there are some truly terrible outfits that I wore in the early 2000s. Now I gravitate towards the classics and items that work on petites: light fabrics, not too much pattern, clean lines."
Who has been your favorite character to play? "I loved existing in Lizzie Grant's skin on Entourage. Her power and confidence were intoxicating, and I loved the opportunity to learn from how she behaved in the world."
Which character have you portrayed that you relate to most, in terms of wardrobe and beauty, and why? "I played a girl in a movie called Love at the Thanksgiving Day Parade who wore only vintage clothing. I did the majority of shopping for that film myself; I got to attack my favorite vintage store and do a huge pull of items that I loved—it was heaven!"
What about your upcoming role in ABC's The Whispers—how do you relate to your character Amanda? "My character is a suburban mom, so she wears pastel jeans, a flowered button-up and Keds—it definitely felt too conservative for my taste, but it was comfortable and perfect for this woman's very well-orchestrated life."
What is one fashion or beauty item in your routine you can't live without, and why? "Honestly, I could do without any of it. There's something very powerful about being comfortable existing just as you are, and that's where I'm finding myself in life right now."
