3. Powdering With White Lead
In Ancient Rome, high class women would like to powder their faces white to show they lived lives of leisure - the paler they were, the less out in the sun they were, and the more well off their family was thought to be. However, in order to achieve that white pallor, they would powder their face with white lead - and one of the side effects of lead was that it corroded the skin, which only made them use it more to hide the scarring. It was a terrible, painful cycle.
