Actors on stage during the 18th-century had to be even paler than the ladies of the High Court, so they used a deadly combination to reach that white complexion.

To create their stage makeup, ceruse was mixed with mercury and ground orris. To get it even paler, they would sometimes mix in ground hogs’ bones, borax powder, egg whites and lemon juice for good measure.
