Julia Margaret Cameron (1815- 1879) was the original Annie Leibovitz, shooting the biggest celebrities of the Victorian era. Cameron was a British photographer but didn't touch a camera until she was 48 years old — but the late start didn't stop her from reaching notoriety.

“From the first moment I handled my lens with a tender ardour,” she famously wrote upon receiving her first camera as a gift, “and it has become to me as a living thing, with voice and memory and creative vigour.”

She often staged her photos in a Biblical, Shakespearean, or Roman kind of way, creating dreamy and fantasy-like photographs.
