Alma Thomas
Alma Thomas (1891- 1978) was an African-American Expressionist painter, specializing in Color Field paintings. Her work had qualities similar to West African paintings and Byzantine mosaics, and she was most interested in the color and composition of a piece.

The Obamas chose a couple of pieces to display in the White House during their terms, making Thomas the first African-American woman artist to be part of the public permanent collection display in the White House.
