2. Richard Gere Banned For Speaking Out Against Chinese Government
While presenting the award for Best Art Direction at the 1993 Academy Awards, actor Richard Gere denounced the Chinese government for its history of human rights violations in China and Tibet. He also asked the audience to join him in collectively focusing and sending "truth, love, and a kind of sanity” to Deng Xiaoping, with the hope that he would pull his troops out of Tibet. He was then unceremoniously banned from a presenting role during the show, until 2013.
