7. Pine Barrens in New Jersey
Pine Barrens may seem like just another innocuously beautiful stretch of land and forest in New Jersey, but it has a nasty history. While the area, spanning over one million acres and seven counties in the state, boomed in the colonial era, it eventually became a ghost town, where there are plenty of paranormal wonders –– and wanderers.

According to urban legend, in 1735 a ghoulish creature with leathery wings, a goat's head, and hooves was born to a woman named Deborah Leeds. It immediately flew up the chimney of the Leeds' home and into the Barrens, where it's been ever since. Ready to book a trip?
