Barcelona Missed Out On The Eiffel Tower
When designer Gustave Eiffel pitched the idea of the tower to Barcelona, the city passed. Why? It was too ugly. So instead he pitched it to Paris for a temporary monument during the 1889 International Exposition. Although the French weren't too keen on it either, the city learned to love the tower and it became not just a symbol of Paris but an icon.
