Jhene Aiko
Who: Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo is an American singer, songwriter, and poet of mixed heritage: Her mother is Japanese, Spanish, and Dominican, while her father is African American, Native American, German, and Jewish. Her name is pronounced "Juh-nay Ahh-ee-ko."

Why she's fearless: When you listen to Jhené Aiko's music — or at least, her sophomore album, Trip — you've gotta prepare yourself for all the feels. The 22-track surprise release details just that: The 5'2 vocalist embarks on an otherworldly, psychedelic trip through grief, love, and healing after the death of her brother, Miyagi Chilombo, from cancer in 2012.

If you haven't listened to it, please do yourself a favor and do so immediately. The album is unusual, emotional, and utterly moving.

Our musical picks: "Jukai," "While We're Young"
