Ariana Grande's 'thank u, next' Video Will Be A Reflection Of Our Generation
Just how excited are we for this music video? The limit does not exist.
Unless you've been living under a sadly Ariana Grande-less rock, you've heard the hype — and probably seen the social media teasers.
In fact, I'd even go so far as to crown the "God is a Woman" singer official Queen of the Instagram Teaser. Ariana is her own hype woman, and she's damn good at it. After all, why shouldn't she be? If there's anything "God is a Woman" taught us (both the unforgettable track and its chill-inducing music video), it's that 2018 is the year of Ariana Grande, people. And if there's something all who stan Grande can agree on, it's that excitement for her "thank u, next" music video is now at an all-time high.
Dropping Friday, the video trailer for Ariana's newest number one single is an iconic reenactment of the infamous, "Who is Regina George?" scene from everyone's favorite teen comedy. Yes, we're talking Mean Girls! The star-studded trailer tells us that we can also expect shoutouts to legendary films like Clueless, 13 Going on 30, and Legally Blonde — as if we could be any more excited.
I mean, can we talk about the Instagram pic Ariana shared with Jennifer Coolidge?!
While the singer herself doesn't appear in the trailer, it's clear whose role she'll be taking on — queen of the plastics, none other than Regina George, of course.
Oh, and did we mention she roped in actual Mean Girls stars, like Bethany Byrd of super-jumbo tampon fame, and Jonathan Bennett? Honestly, this is so good, it's damn near close to making fetch happen. And let's just say Aaron Samuels is fully aware of his sex appeal, even years later. In the vid, he references one of many infamous quotes the film gave us, boasting: "Ariana Grande told me my hair looked sexy pushed back. She's not wrong!"
But the cameos don't end there. The vid also features appearances from YouTubers Colleen Ballinger, Gabi DeMartino, and even singer Troye Sivan, who is a close friend of Ariana's. Sivan drops the line: "I heard she's a lesbian now and dating some chick called Aubrey — it's f***ing sick."
So who's Aubrey? Well, funny you should ask — the joke is a pointed reference to a little snafu on the part of Apple Music when the song was first released. After they shared a misquoted lyric from the gloriously petty pop ballad, the Twitterverse pretty much exploded, thinking Ariana was actually coming out as a lesbian — and dating a girl named Aubrey:
Speaking of petty (read: passive-aggressive), in addition to being a magnificent homage to our favorite pop culture moments from the early 2000s, there's a requisite Pete Davidson jab to look forward to as well. "Ariana broke off an engagement, so I found a guy to propose to me, and I broke off an engagement," Bethany Byrd tells us.
He doesn't even go here!
Because while #Pariana may have been short-lived, we all know Miss Grande's reign is not.
