The Clock Struck Midnight And Taylor Swift Released A New Video — Here Are All The Hidden Messages
There are too many Easter eggs to count.
Months ago, Taylor Swift began teasing the date of April 26. While fans didn't quite know what Swift had up her sleeve, it was pretty obvious a new project was on the way. And indeed it was. As the clock struck midnight on the East Coast, Swift released a brand new song and music video, and now all the clues she'd been dropping make so much sense.
The pop song, titled "ME!," features Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco, and the music video is every bit colorful and fantastical.
"ME!" is a new and improved return to the "Shake It Off"-era Taylor, and a major transition from her last album, Reputation. Actually, maybe transformation is the better word, because Swift is clearly driving home the point that this a new chapter in her life.
As you would expect, not only is the video in line with the aesthetic she's been rocking both in attire and on her social media accounts, but it also contains manifestations of a lot of the clues she's been teasing over these last couple months. There is a ton going on in this new video, so let's take a look at some of the video's biggest moments and fun details.
There were butterflies, there were pastel purses, there were colorful cobblestone streets, and there were chickens wearing sunglasses — all of which appeared on her Instagram.
Circling back to butterflies, in addition to this March 14 Instagram post about the Southern California butterfly migration, the video also shows a vicious snake bursting into numerous butterflies. Snake = Reputation. Butterflies = this new, positive chapter of Swift's life.
As for the framed pictures of chickens in sunglasses, did you notice a certain three women in a frame of their own? Yup, that's the Dixie Chicks — a feature which was confirmed by the band itself. Maybe there is a Taylor Swift x Dixie Chicks collaboration on the way — country fans rejoice!
The video opens with Swift and Urie arguing in French, and it's actually a pretty funny scene. Swift says, "Not in front of our young daughters," (in French of course) as the camera pans to her two cats sitting on a couch. The scene ends with Swift storming out of the room saying "Je suis calme," when clearly she is not calm. We've all been there.
The video also shows Taylor getting a new kitten (cute!), which is actually her new cat in real life. The singer posted an adorable pic with the kitty on Instagram with the caption "And then there were three..." Sorry Brendan Urie!
Honestly, there are probably even more we didn't catch, because to say this girl was committed to hidden clues and messages is an understatement. Even for a non-Swift fan like myself, I have to admit this build up was not only extremely well executed, but pretty damn fun. I think it's safe to assume a new album is on the horizon, and the vibe will be totally different than the last.
