What Exactly Was Happening at the Met Gala?
Last night's red carpet was way, way off.
In case you missed it, the red carpet of all red carpets took place last night at the Met Gala and as far as Met Galas go, the carpet could not have been more off. Less than half of those lucky enough to attend actually attempted to honor this year's theme 'Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age of Technology' and I think most really missed the mark, and I mean, by miles - the rest of those who graced the carpet were wholly underwhelming.
The Met Gala is the biggest night in fashion and there is rarely a lack of creativity on the carpet. The long shots of the infamous red carpeted stairs, a celeb's extensive train gorgeously draped along the steps are the whole point of dressing up for the event each year - yet, last night these shots were few and far between. Oddly fitted minis and Doc Marten-esque chunky boots were rampant on the carpet and it went against everything the Met Gala stands for. There were a few who totally hit it out of the park - Zac Posen and Claire Danes, I'm lookin' at you - but overall, it was the biggest fail in the history of the Met carpet, from start to finish. There was a total lack of creativity, risk-taking, adherence to the theme and overall jaw-dropping looks leaving us really unsatisfied.
Let me just walk you through the rare hits and complete misses on this year's Met Galla red carpet:
Taylor Swift in Louis Vuitton
Let me start by saying, I am a big fan of Taylor Swift - and from way back when she was a curly-haired teenager with teardrops on her guitar - but I just can't get on board with any of this look. There is so much wrong happening here I don't even know where to start. It looks like a child's dance recital costume gone very, very badly. How did a silver snakeskin cut-out ruffled mini feel like a good choice for the Met Gala, Tay?
Did I miss the 'Please wear combat boots on the red carpet' memo? Awful. Call me old school, but the Met Gala red carpet is legendary and the fact that combat boots were trending on this year's carpet completely baffles me. I am not against the chunky-heeled Doc Marten look on any other day, but paired with a mini dress on the Met red carpet? Borderline offensive, sorry not even close to being sorry.
Claire Danes wins the Met Gala
Claire Danes channeled Cinderella in a perfectly fitted, intricately detailed Zac Posen ball gown but the real shock and awe came when the besties went inside and the gown became illuminated. Not only does she look like an ethereal, modern-day princess but they killed the theme bringing technology into fashion. At least someone got it right! How proud does Posen look glaring at his muse? Adorable.
Pretty but unimpressive
If you showed me these pictures I would say absolutely gorgeous, just as these women usually are. Beautiful looks for any average red carpet, but neutral columns for the Met Gala? Boring! Come on ladies, take a risk, do something remotely in tune with the theme. Impress me!
What exactly were they thinking?
As I said above, I fully encourage creativity on the Met carpet. However, there is a fine line between creative and just plain, insanely crazy. When did it become okay to show up to the Met Gala in a leotard and fishnets or what can only be described as some sort of ass-less chaps? Don't even get me started on DVF's butterfly nest or Solange's yellow spandex knee-highs. What exactly is even happening here? These looks would make sense if the pictures were taken after Heidi Klum's Halloween party but Met Gala appropriate? Absolutely not.
Year after year we have counted on SJP to bring it on the Met Gala carpet, no holds bar. But this year she totally disappointed us in a pair of white capris, some sort of lacey belle-shaped ruffled-cuffs and a partially backless blazer. Carrie Bradshaw would be seriously questioning her entire life right about now.
Successful attempts at the theme
While most attendees fully ignored this year's theme, there were a handful who ran with it bringing tons of silver sparkle and metal accents to the carpet. I always appreciate anyone who puts some thought into their Met Gala ensemble, regardless of how I think they ultimately look. My personal favorite attempt here is Poppy Delevingne who definitely pulled it off, from the dress to the jewels to the sleek hair and darker makeup. Zayn and Gigi's red carpet debut was pretty spot-on the theme as well.
