Why it Works: Elle Macpherson in Head-to-Toe Black

One of our favorite Australian supermodels put the 'fierce' in Elle Macpherson on a recent visit to London's storied celeb haunt The Ivy, where the lingerie magnate and host of NBC's Fashion Star turned heads in a painted-on, black-as-the-night ensemble.

The Jacket: It's more of a cloaky, cut out, masterfully engineered zippered thing really. Like something a superhero supermodel might wear to immobilize passerby in their tracks. The weather needs to be just right for rocking this masterpiece: cool, with a whisper of a breeze necessitating only shoulder and bicep coverage. Either that, or you only wear it if you're famous for coverage from the limo to the door. Yes, that's much more logical.

The Pants: Well, calling them pants could be a bit of an overstatement. Could someone phone Madonna and ask her for the technical term for leather leggings? In the meantime we'll go with leathings, and Macpherson rocks them like the pro she is, sailing entirely clear of the trying-too-hard vibe that often accompanies such leather goods, instead channeling vintage Joan Jett.

The Shoes: Black pants plus black pointed ankle boots often equals "witchy woman," but thanks to the barely-there flash of ankle, the Halloween potential is neutralized in favor of a runway-ready effect.

The Clutch: Replete in poppy polka dots, the accessory add a welcome lightness to the otherwise gothic palette. From the looks of it, Macpherson's purse contains the secret to everlasting youth and possibly a teensy tiny straightening iron, cast in black no doubt.
