Gladys Bentley was a famous, tuxedo-clad cabaret singer and pianist in the 1920s, drawing huge crowds to the Clam House in Harlem to catch her acts. She was one of the first gay jazz musicians in the business and wasn't secretive about her sexuality — she was just as famous for her glamorous girlfriends as she was for her shows.
