Anyone who has kids — or at least watches movies with them – appreciates when a cartoon flick has something for adults too. Sometimes it's a mildly inappropriate joke, sometimes it's a nostalgic reference, and sometimes it's a moment that triggers tears, leaving the children around you confused while you run for the tissue box. Come on, we've all been there. Right?!
Even if you're not a crier, here are the movie moments that'll tug at your heart strings, at the very least.
The First 10 Minutes of Up
This is the mac daddy of emotional movie montages. In the first 10 minutes of Up, we get a whirlwind of crazy love, infertility, and death thrown at us. Carl and Ellie start out as adventure-loving kids who fall in love, get married, buy a house, and never get around to taking their dream trip to Paradise Falls, since life always gets in the way. At the end of the montage, Ellie dies and leaves Carl this message in their old Adventure Book: "Thanks for the adventure — now go have a new one! Love, Ellie" SOBBING.
When Andy Gives Away His Toys in Toy Story 3
Oof. In Toy Story 3, Andy's all grown up (well, going to college at least) and it's finally time to donate all of his old beloved toys. He ends up giving his childhood pals to a neighbor girl named Bonnie and when he finally hands over his BFF Woody, it's just too much to handle. Goodbye toys, goodbye childhood, goodbye all control of your face faucet.
When Bambi's Mom Dies in Bambi
The tears flow in this Disney classic when Bambi's mom is killed. Bambi runs on his mom's command when they hear a hunter, and as soon as he gets to safety, he realizes she's not behind him. Then the poor fawn spends the next minute of the movie calling for her in the snow before he learns she's dead from his stoic buck father. Good grief.
When Gru Realizes He Loves the Girls in 'Despicable Me'
We definitely laugh more than we cried in this one. But we sniffle a little each time at the end when Gru quits being stubborn and realizes he loves being a dad to his three adopted daughters and writes them the sweetest/strangest bedtime story ever.
When the Mice Sing "Somewhere Out There" in American Tail
It's impossible not to get choked up when Fievel and his sister Tanya sing this touching ballad, thinking they might never see each other again. Their little mouse voices and the magic of James Horner music are just too much to handle without tears.
