13. 'Heartburn' By Nora Ephron
Long before she was writing romantic comedies, Nora Ephron was a freelance writer who was married to journalist Carl Bernstein. It was when she was pregnant with her second child that she found out Bernstein (who broke the Watergate scandal with Bob Woodward) was cheating on her. So, Ephron does what any woman in her position would do: she wrote about it. Although it's categorized as semi-autobiographical, enough of the details of her personal life and marriage to Bernstein are close enough in the novel that he threatened to sue her. The book is pure Ephron in every way, with a dash of beautiful revenge.
