1929-1939 and 1940-1954: These two prolific artists had a tumultuous relationship that spanned 25 years. Diego Rivera was 22 years older than Kahlo, and the two were titans in the art world. Even though they reportedly had an open marriage, both were wildly jealous, which eventually led to their first divorce in 1939. Their separation lasted less than a year however, and they quickly remarried in 1940.

The two stayed married until Kahlo's death in 1954, and after a year of mourning, Rivera moved onto his next wife. But that didn't mean he didn't consider Kahlo the love of his life. In fact, he requested for his ashes to be mixed with hers upon the time of his death.
