If you've never heard of Melasma, I hope you never have to. I hope you never find yourself in a dermatologist's office listening to her say the word while you're whining about the dark splotches on your face that you can't shake. I noticed dark spots developing throughout my early 20s but it wasn't until my late 20s—and on my honeymoon no less—that things got really crazy.

I returned from basking in the Mediterranean sun with the darkest spots I'd ever seen. Despite wearing SPF 50 all week long, things had gotten out of hand and as a skincare junkie, I flipped out. My derm quickly diagnosed it as an extreme form of hyperpigmentation known as Melasma. She prescribed some intense creams to lighten the spots during the winter but warned that I'd have to keep it up with SPF and other preventative measures throughout the following summer.

I turned to Shiseido's White Lucent Total Brightening Serum ($125) to keep my wintertime results up. The formula is powerful enough to keep the dark patches at bay but gentle enough that I wasn't extra sensitive to the strong summer sun. I've continued to use this serum to maintain my newly lightened skin and prevent new dark spots from forming.

If you think you may have Melasma, talk to your dermatologist before you try a new treatment. However, even if you just suffer from a few sun spots or some hyperpigmentation, this serum will help brighten your skin and fade spots in just a few weeks.
