Hamish Bowles and Anna Wintour at the Balenciaga and Spain opening gala
Vogue's European editor-at-large Hamish Bowles is a recognizable figure in the fashion industry. With his tailored suits, colorful ties and on-again off-again mustache, he is easily spotted front row at fashion shows or chatting with Anna Wintour. When we found out Hamish would be curating the Balenciaga and Spain exhibit at the de Young museum in San Francisco, we jumped at the chance to interview him.
In person, Hamish is as pleasant as can be and impeccably dressed. We were buzzing with questions. But as much as we wanted the inside goss on working with Anna Wintour, we stuck with the program and quizzed Hamish on the awe-inspiring exhibit he put together and his love affair with fashion.
Hamish speaks with passion about Balenciaga, going into great detail about the talent and artistry involved in the production of the garments. We tried to get him to reveal the piece he loved best, but he was a gentleman and wouldn't play favorites. Lastly, we wondered how a fledgeling fashion lover could build up their own couture collection. Hamish was hesitant to reveal his secrets, but he gave us good advice—do your research. He recounted a time when he chanced upon a vintage bolero and knew immediately it was Balenciaga despite the piece not having a tag. It's this knowledge that'll help any fashion lover collect their favorite pieces.
